All research involving
the use of human subjects requires review and approval.
This includes unfunded research, research supported by intramural
or extramural grants, research related to a dissertation
or master's thesis, research using secondary data analysis,
and research using publicly available data (except for publicly
available data on HSD's pre-approved list available from
this site: http://www.washington.edu/research/hsd/policy.php,
select Section T-26).* Your research may be considered
"no
risk, exempt," but completion and submission of
a Certificate
of Exemption is still required.
*Graduate
and undergraduate students must submit a Certificate of
Exemption to the Department even if their research uses
data that's on HSD's pre-approved list.
If you are submitting
a grant proposal that includes the use of human subjects
OSP will not release your grant to the funding agency until
the appropriate materials have been submitted to the Human
Subjects Division.
You may want to
consult with the Human Subjects Division prior to submitting
your materials for review.
In general your
Human Subjects application materials (including Exemption
Forms) are reviewed at the Department level first and should
be submitted to the Department Administrator for initial review.
The Department Chair or designee will sign on behalf of the
Department.
When your project
is approved please provide a copy of Human Subjects approvals
to the Department Administrator for record-keeping purposes.
