Dissertation Topic: Workplace Control and Worker Commitment in a Mid-Sized Fast Food Corporation and Its Franchises..... Dissertation Committee: Julie Brines (chair), Pepper Scwhartz, Jake Rosenfeld, Alexes Harris..... In my dissertation, I ask why do low-wage fast food laborers work as hard as they do(if they work hard at all)?..... Work in the fast food industry is commonly thought of as monotonous, alienating and degrading. In fact, little research has been done to determine how fast food employers structure the workplace to maintain profits while offering their workers so little in return. Through interviews with company officials, employees, and a four month participant observation period as a part-time unpaid crew member, my study compares the practices of a fast food chain's corporate and franchise restaurants. My study demonstrates how low-wage employers, in an industry that is notorious for its poor treatment of workers and high turnover, structure the workplace to inspire loyalty, commitment, and most of all, continuous productivity.
