I have gone through three unrelated careers. I was first on the faculty of Case Western Reserve University where I created the Cleveland Area Survey. I was up for tenure and really did not like academia. I asked the university how to stop the tenure process and was told that the only way to stop it was to resign. I did. At the time I was a part-time opera singer and moved to arts management. I produced operas in Cleveland and symphony concerts in San Francisco. We were one of the first non-profits to computerize our books. After the Board and I disbanded our orchestra (the right move), I became a journalist covering computers. I had over 1,500 published articles (with nary a footnote) and served for several years as the President of the Computer Press Association. I have lived in San Francisco since 1981. |

I'm not sure many people would pick Soc as a prelude to law (I note that J.D. isn't an option in the highest degree box), but I think it prepared me well to deal with people. I was awarded my law degree from Gonzaga, and I've had an interesting career. I practice for a few years in Seattle, followed by seven years working for Aramco in Saudi Arabia, six plus years with GE in upstate New York, and the last thirteen plus years with my present company in southeastern Michigan. The focus in my career has been transactional law, which brings me into contact with a plethora of negotiating styles. They all work to one extent or another, but some leave you with good feelings, and others not so good. Sometimes I wish I would have kept notes on all the people I dealt with. I could have written a book. |
