This dissertation chapter focuses on how that status achievement model can help explain where we see zeal. I consider examples of zeal from a wide range of voluntary association and how these occurrences are consistent with the theory I proposed, and compare that explanation to the social approval model, the most prominent explanation of zeal in standard rational choice theory.
