The
Sociology Honors Program is an academically rigorous senior
year to complement the major, designed for students who
would like closer intellectual contact with faculty, as
well as students interested in graduate work in sociology
or in related professional fields. Honors curriculum trains
students to design and execute their own research for senior
theses through small seminars, independent study with faculty,
and an intensive social science methods series. Successful
graduates of the Honors Program are awarded the bachelor's
degree "With Distinction."
Sociology Honors
students also have access to all the resources of the University
Honors Program.

The
program is designed to run from autumn quarter through spring
quarter of the senior year. Students must complete the following
requirements to graduate with honors:
- SOC 496-497, Honors
Senior Seminar
This two-quarter sequence, taught by the Honors faculty, will cover advanced
theory and study design in preparation for the honors thesis.
Autumn 2008 - Winter 2009
- SOC 321
This course covers more advanced topics in
sociological methodology than the introductory SOC 220.Winter 2009
- Successful completion
of the Honors Thesis
Students will register for SOC 495 (Honors Senior Thesis)
under the supervision of an individual faculty sponsor with
expertise in the relevant area of interest. Students are
also expected to present their research at the Undergraduate
Research Symposium in May. Spring 2009
- Sociology GPA of
at least 3.50 and UW GPA of at least 3.30 at graduation
- Honors students
complete at least 60 Sociology credits (rather than 50)
Prospective
students should apply to the Honors Program in the spring
quarter of their junior year.
