Featured Sociology Students

The Sociology Department began the Featured Sociology Student Award in 2004, previously the Student of the Month Award, to recognize the diverse achievements and contributions of our undergraduate majors. Each academic year we recognize a small group of undergraduates who are enthusiastic about sociology, contribute to their sociology classes, and integrate their sociological studies with their extracurricular activities. Sociology faculty, graduate student teaching assistants, and sociology advising office staff nominate students for this award. Recipient photographs and biographical information, as well as remarks from their recommenders appear inside the Sociology Advising Office and in the Sociology Newsletter.  The names of awardees and nominees who are graduating seniors are printed in the Sociology Graduation Celebration program.

Academic Year 2007-08

Brady Weeks

Brady Weeks is a senior majoring in sociology and will graduate this summer. While studying at the UW, Brady has gained important research experience working with Dr. Stewart Tolnay on the Lynch Link Project and has enjoyed that experience very much. He has also spent time volunteering for organizations such as the Washington Trails Association. After graduation, he plans to pursue his hobbies including backpacking, kayaking, and interacting with people of various cultures, while traveling in South America. Brady intends on furthering his education in graduate or law school.

Chri Sevo

Chri moved to Seattle from Sweden. She earned her AA from Seattle Central Community College and will graduate from the UW in Spring 2007 with the goal of continuing on to law school. At Seattle Central, she took a sociology class called Sociology of Media and decided to major in the field because it investigates issues she finds important to our society. In the future, she plans to work for minority rights and against discrimination. She is interested in legal research and feels that as a sociology major she has gained a great fundamental understanding of research. She is also grateful for having the opportunity to do independent research with Dr. Steve Pfaff. She has learned so much from the work and from listening to Dr. Pfaff.

Matthew Bennett

Matt is a 23 year old international student from Southampton, England. He originally came to the U.S. on a soccer scholarship and he has played soccer on the national level at his two previous universities. He expects to graduate with majors in sociology and psychology and a minor in philosophy. In terms of sociology, he is interested in all aspects of religion, social psychology, and theory. Of his classes here at UW, Matt is most proud of the relationships and experiences that he has acquired through working with TA’s and professors. Along with working under the wing of Dr. Susan Pitchford examining pilgrimage and tourism, he also assists Dr. Steve Pfaff with research regarding the ‘Reformation’ in Germany. Matt is extremely excited to be a part of these projects and to gain invaluable research experience. In the future, he hopes to go on to graduate school. What is still left for him to accomplish en-route to this goal will be a tremendous challenge, but also a lot of fun!

Paul Dumas

Prior to enrolling as a sociology major at the UW, Paul was introduced to sociology at Bellevue Community College through a Sociology of Sex and Gender course. He felt a deep appreciation for the question his instructors insisted that he answer: “How do you know what you know?” Some of his general interests include sexuality and gender issues, the social construction of free will, and the intersection of cultural and genetic inheritance. Most recently, Paul has helped gather field interviews for Barbara Reskin and Alexes Harris’s Payday Loan Study, a research project examining why people use payday lending. Paul hopes to graduate with dual bachelor’s degrees in sociology and biology, and go on to work in research.

Elliott Cribby

Elliott Cribby is a senior majoring in sociology. He transferred to the UW in the fall of 2006 from Columbia Basin Community College where he received his AA degree. Because of the rigorous schedule he faces every day as a student and a baseball player first at Columbia Basin and then at the UW, he has learned to be responsible and dedicated in all aspects of his life. Baseball has not only given him a way to compete, it also has taught him about life, how to interact with others, and how the world works through social interaction. After he graduates, Elliott plans to work toward a masters degree in education and pursue a career as a high school teacher and baseball coach. In his free time, when he is not studying or playing baseball, he enjoys fishing, hanging out with friends, and just enjoying what life has brought to him.

Mark Brown

Mark Brown graduated with a BA in sociology winter quarter 2007. His most enjoyable experiences as a sociology student came from learning from the professors whom he found to be the program’s most pragmatic, balanced, and truthful: Katherine Beckett, Jonathan Wender, and Bob Crutchfield. His most enjoyable experience outside the classroom was his summer abroad studying Spanish in Guadalajara, Mexico. He plans to apply what he has learned here at the UW to everyday debates with others, challenging them to listen to all sides of an argument. He intends to search for a career in the travel industry, while keeping Seattle as a home base as he journeys the globe.

Bryan Newton

Some of the best classes that Bryan has taken at the UW were Sociology of Deviance and Social Control and Sociological Theory. He plans on studying in the Balkans in the spring and then in Prague in the summer. He hopes to have a lot of fun and will be back in the Seattle area in September, 2007.
