FAQ

Q: Where do I get an application to the sociology major?

A: The application is online. Go to the Sociology Major Application now.

Q: Can I use courses taken at other universities for my sociology major?

A: Courses taken in the US that have a sociology prefix generally can be used toward the sociology major at the UW. Remember that you must complete a minimum of 25 credits of UW sociology courses. For more information go to Information for Transfer Students.

Q: Can I minor in sociology?

A: Like most large departments at the UW, sociology does not offer a minor. However, you can take 20 or more credits in sociology and highlight this on your resume with “concentration in sociology.”

Q: Can I participate in a study abroad program if I major in sociology?

A: At this point, we do not offer department-sponsored study abroad programs. However, you can participate in programs run by other UW departments and receive credit through them. You can also study with a UW affiliate or non-affiliate program. When you complete the program, bring us the necessary materials and we will evaluate whether the credits can apply to sociology. For more information go to Study Abroad Credit.

Q:What happens if I was given an "Incomplete" and do not complete the work for the course?

A: If you do not complete the work within one quarter, the "I" will convert to a 0.0. The instructor can still change the grade up to one year after the course was taken.

Q: What should I do if I need to re-take a required course?

A: You will need to fill out a Petition to Re-take a Required Course and meet with an advisor. Make sure you explain your situation in specific detail on the form.

Q: Can I take a course in my major Satisfactory/Not Satisfactory (S/NS)?

A: Courses graded with the S/NS option cannot be used for major requirements or general skill requirements (e.g. VLPA, NW, etc.). Courses taken as S/NS can only be used as general elective credits. Please note that S/NS, which you select through MyUW, is different than C/NC which is a grading policy designated by the department before classes begin.  C/NC courses can count toward major requirements with some restrictions. For more information click here.

Q: Does sociology have an honors program?

A: The department offers a senior year Sociology Honors Program for students who maintain a sociology GPA of at least 3.5 and cumulative UW GPA of 3.3. Applications are due in May. For more information go to the Sociology Honors Program.

Q: How do I know if I'm ready to graduate?

A: If you have earned 125 or more credits and expect to graduate within the next four quarters, you will need to fill out a graduation application with one of the sociology advisors. Go to the Sociology Advising Office for contact information.

Q: How do I get Graduating Senior Priority (GSP)?

A: GSP allows you to be the first to register for two quarters before you graduate. Make sure you fill out a graduation application with an adviser 2-3 quarters before you graduate to take advantage of GSP. For more information on GSP deadlines click here.

Q: Can I go through the spring commencement ceremony, if I will complete my remaining credits in summer?

A: Yes. Please note that if you plan to attend the UW Commencement and the Sociology Graduation Celebration, you will need to register for each separately. For registration information go to UW Commencement and go to the Sociology Graduation Celebration.

Q: Will a double major or a minor improve my prospects for graduate school or a career?

A: If you have already formulated your career goals, a double major or minor might be helpful if it provides a stronger foundation for the particular field you wish to enter in combination with your current major. Please note that along with their own criteria, graduate schools look for high GPAs, excellent recommendations from faculty, high GRE scores, and excellent work samples, so focus your energy where it counts.

Q: After I graduate, will the major help me in terms of a career?

A: Contrary to popular opinion, there are job opportunities for liberal arts majors at the baccalaureate level. Discovering these opportunities involves a search process. Employers highly value basic skills in writing, analysis, critical thinking, and understanding people and institutions in our society.  Do not underestimate your potential to do interesting and rewarding work.
