Graduate Admissions

The Department of Sociology welcomes applications to our graduate program. We receive between 150 and 200 applications each year and usually a cohort of 15 to 18 new graduate students is admitted

Most admitted students enter our M.A. program with the understanding that they wish to pursue a Ph.D. If you enter with an M.A. degree (which required a Master's thesis) in Sociology from another university, you will be admitted as a post-M.A. student initially. After approximately two quarters of study in our department, you can apply for admission into the Ph.D. program. If you enter with an M.A. degree in a field other than Sociology, you will most likely be admitted as a pre-M.A. student here and be expected to complete an M.A. degree in Sociology before application for entry into the Ph.D. program.

Application Deadlines

The deadline for admission for US citizens and Permanent Residents of the US is December 15th. The Graduate Admissions office recommends that International students should submit applications by November 1st. The Sociology department recognizes that November 1st may be too early for some International applicants and accepts applications submitted up to December 15th.

Applicants will submit an electronic on-line application. The application process allows applicants to submit most materials except the GRE Score and transcripts via the web application. Instructions for submitting application materials can be found on the web application.
