The Recruitment
Weekend is for admitted students to learn more about the Sociology
Department at the University of Washington. Prospective students
who have received notification that they have been admitted
to the UW Sociology Ph.D. program for Fall 2010 are invited
to attend.
The department may
be able to reimburse a portion of your airfare (or bus or
train fare or vehicle mileage).

Recruitment Weekend Schedule (.pdf)
Sociology department events start
first thing Friday morning so it is best to arrive in Seattle
by Thursday. Events are scheduled through Saturday early afternoon
so plan to leave Saturday night or Sunday.
Note that the Graduate
Opportunity and Minority Achievement Program (GO-MAP) Prospective
Student Days events begin Thursday morning, April 1st.
Check their web site for events you might want to attend.

We
can arrange for you to stay with a current graduate student.
If you are interested, email
Michele Maroto (maroto@u.washington.edu).
Once we get everyone assigned, we will contact you with the
name and contact info of the person.
If
you are bringing a spouse/partner/friend or just like more
privacy, it is better to get a hotel. Here is a list
of places nearby that may give UW visitor rates.
We
cannot reimburse for accommodations.
We will provide
a continental breakfast in the department on Friday morning.
Friday
afternoon prospective students will attend the Graduate Opportunity
and Minority Achievement Program Prospective Student Days
lunch.
A
department reception will be held on Friday from 6 pm until
you want to leave at a local restaurant or pub. It is a good
opportunity to visit informally with graduate students, other
prospective students, and faculty.
There
are many inexpensive ethnic and fast food restaurants on campus
and just off campus. And, of course, coffee is everywhere.
We cannot reimburse you for food.
Often the best deals are found online.
Try some of these web sites:
http://www.cheapairlines.com
http://www.cheapflights.com/
http://www.expedia.com/
http://www.orbitz.com/
(If
travel reimbursement was included in your offer.)
Note: If you are
booking both an airline ticket and hotel through an online
reservation place, be sure to get something that shows the
price of the airline ticket separate from the hotel. We can't
reimburse hotel fees (or food).
The Travel Office
has strict rules about documentation. We will need something
that shows the price, where you came from, date you left,
that you arrived here, and the date you left…basically your
itinerary. We also need an official document that shows the
paid price.
From the airport:
There are a couple
of very quick and reasonably priced ways to get from Sea-Tac
Airport to the UW:
Gray
Line Airporter
Seattle Metro Bus:
Try the Trip Planner
on the Metro web site
(enter from "Sea-Tac Airport" to "University
of Washington HUB") or just take Metro
Route 194 from Sea-Tac Airport (baggage claim, bay 2)
to Convention Center station.
Take any number
of busses from downtown to the University; they are listed
on the UW UPASS
web site.
Depending on arrival
times, we may be able to coordinate picking people up downtown.
We can pay for bus
or train tickets and mileage (based on a Travel Office formula)
for people driving from other Pacific NW locations. For tickets,
we will need the receipt showing how much you paid and the
from/to information.
Please let us know
whether you are coming by Friday, March 12th. Email Catherine
Provost when you know your plans: cuala@u.washington.edu.
Contact Michele Maroto (maroto@u.washington)
if you want to stay with a graduate student.
